Better business performance doesn't happen by accident.
It's designed.
The question is: who is responsible for it?
Think of a business you love or admire.
Chances are its product, service, brand, marketing and operations—the end-to-end experience—is consistent, considered, well crafted.
Chances are it leads its category. Chances are it charges a premium.
This outcome wasn’t left to chance. It’s by design.
While many businesses have designers scattered across teams and functions—or bring external capability in when required—most businesses have no design leadership at an organisational level.
OnDemand CDO fills that gap by providing fractional design leadership—helping businesses identify opportunities, align teams and partners, improve decision-making and guide transformation through a structured framework that spans diagnostic, roadmap, governance, impact and capability building.
Designed from day one. And every day after.
Every business was built on design decisions. And they continue to make design decisions every day.
The way a business understands customers and creates products that meet their needs is designed.
The way services are delivered and experienced is designed.
The way customers discover, understand and remember a business through brand, marketing and sales is designed.
The operational processes and systems that support the business and its people are designed.
But not everything that is designed is intentional.
Intentional vs accidental design.
Some of these decisions are made intentionally through clear thinking, consistent standards and strategic direction.
Others are designed accidentally or ad-hoc over time through disconnected decisions made across teams, functions and external partners.
The difference between the two is where competitive advantage lies.
Intentional design accumulates value.
It creates products people prefer, services people trust, brands people remember and experiences people return to.
Accidental design accumulates cost.
Inconsistency. Friction. Waste. Unmet expectations. Confusion. The gradual erosion of trust.
Design-led businesses lead.
The evidence shows:
- A five-year McKinsey study found that design-led companies outperformed industry peers by 32 percentage points in revenue growth and 56 percentage points in shareholder returns.
- The UK Design Council found that shares in design-led businesses outperformed the FTSE 100 by more than 200% over a decade.
- The Design Management Institute, tracking design-led businesses over ten years, found they outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 200%.
The pattern is consistent: businesses that manage design intentionally outperform those that do not.
Who leads design performance?
While many businesses have designers scattered across teams and functions—or bring external capability in when required—most businesses have no design leadership at an organisational level.
So who is responsible for diagnosing where design is helping—or hindering—business performance?
Who identifies the greatest opportunities for improvement and innovation?
Who creates the standards and governance that keep teams aligned as the organisation grows?
Who ensures investments across product, service, brand, marketing and operations accumulate value rather than create fragmentation?
And who is building the capability, systems and ways of working that enable continuous improvement and long-term organisational performance?
This is the gap OnDemand CDO is designed to fill.
Design leadership, on-demand.
OnDemand CDO provides design leadership without the cost or commitment of a full-time executive hire.
Designed for businesses that need senior design leadership, but don't yet need—or can't justify—a permanent executive role, it provides the experience, perspective and capability required to guide improvement, innovation and change.
Acting as a trusted partner to leadership, I help connect strategy, decision-making and execution across product, service, brand, marketing and operations.
Bringing clarity, alignment and momentum to initiatives that span teams, functions and external partners.
Advisory > Direction > Momentum:
Design leadership when you need it.
Depending on the current state of the business, the pace of change and the level of support required, engagements can range from strategic advisory through to embedded leadership.
Whether providing perspective at critical moments, guiding ongoing improvement, or leading through periods of transformation, the objective remains the same:
Building better business through design.
A framework designed for performance.
The approach is guided by a structured framework for diagnosing performance, identifying opportunities, establishing governance, measuring impact and building capability.
Together, these elements provide a holistic and practical approach to improving design performance across product, service, brand, marketing and operations.
The outcome is greater clarity, stronger alignment and better decision-making—helping organisations build competitive advantage through design.

- Design Opportunity Roadmap Identifying and prioritising opportunities for improvement and innovation.
- Design Governance Framework Creating the standards, principles and decision-making structures that keep teams and external partners aligned.
